By god I'd work for $1.25 an hour! Really, how low do we expect people to go so that we can still respect them?

Once you start getting a few dollars under minimum wage, and certainly at the point of $5/hour you're getting into illegal/unethical territory - should I respect the person or business that is willing to make such a generous offer? Should we as a society be grateful?

Sorry Uptown Urbanist - I was so outraged by the topic that I didn't read you'd already expressed the same sentiment!

I've worked for less in my lifetime. My first job paid 3.75 an hour.

To answer your question..............yes, if I had no other choice

one could not survive on that wage even while working full time, so I would have to figure out a way to survive. I would probably just get a second part time job and pull 65 hour weeks. It would suck, but eventually, I would get back on my feet.

With that being said, if the minimum wage was set a $5 an hour, there certainly would be a large percentage of people that would refuse to work. They would live off the system, and if you took that away, many would turn to crime.

How many years ago was that and what would it be now if inflation-adjusted?....I worked for something like $2.25 but that was the current minimum wage.

My first job, washing dishes at a deli paid .50 cents an hour. I was 11. Talk about child abuse. LOL (No they weren't family.)

I graduated to making donuts at age 12 at another place at $1.00. Then to the big money when I was about 14, $1.65, which was min wage back then.

Now I earn around 10k a month and wonder where it goes. LOL

Old post but no, I wouldn't make enough money that way. Maybe if that was the only option but that is my last solution...

Was desperate and took a waitress job that paid $2.50/hr + tips. Tips on an average were around $2.00/shift. This was in the mid 90s.

My very first job as a teenager paid 3.65 an hour and I did my best at it. Now we are in a different economy than we were back in 1986.

Back then employers were willing to pay you for working hard and hard work got you places. Now, in 2016, employers are stingy and want you to slave for them and give them as much as possible while they only pay you the minimum they can get away with.

I'd still work for $5/hr if I absolutely had to. But they would only get $5 worth of work every hour.

What does $5 buy these days?

I think when I started working at 15 minimum wage was $3.49 an hour..
So if I needed to work for $5.00 an hour to eat, yeah I would..
This guy is not going to jail or prison for illegal activities..

Sure. If that was the only job available. Something is better than nothing until I could figure out how to make more. It's plenty of money to eat on.

I wouldn't be in that job long, because I would make a better opportunity come along.

The thing about $5 an hour is that people can make more living off the government, so many wouldn't work for that amount. They'd rather sit all day in front of the TV while the taxpayer supports them.
