TK, the law takes hate crimes a little more seriously than they do petty crimes. If you assault a gay person just for being gay, you surely will end up locked up.
I wouldn't do it simply because they were gay--I'd only do it if they were being rude to me. By not keeping private matters private--I'd do the same to a heterosexual, so it's not an issue of gay vs. straight. It's a matter of impropriety.
I had to physically throw people out of the shop because they would not respond to a verbal request to leave.
And in those cases you are within your right. I have been a manager at several places and a bouncer at a few clubs and bars. I always warn once or twice then, and only then do I physically toss them out.
I was a GM for a club years ago (a trashy club lol) and we had a motorcycle gang come up from New York. They caused quite a bit of trouble. One of them peed in the corner of the bar. I found out it was a lot of NYC blues. Geeze louise.
