Imagine if the school officials who came down so hard on the 6-year-old were dismissed. How many millions do you think they'd sue the city for? And, having acted in a spirit of political correctness in the first place, they could be counted on never to acknowledge that they'd done anything wrong. (Fortunately for them, their contracts probably don't include common sense as a prerequisite for the job!)

I don't think these officials ought to be dismissed for observing what they *thought* was a valid regulation. They should be "re-educated" to apply common sense in these kinds of situations. Its just too damn bad that education is necessary over something like this.
I don't blame the officials or "political correctness" for what happened here. What I blame is the "9-11 mentality". We have lots of people in this country who believe virtually any restriction on people or their liberties is somehow justifiable because "the alternative is to be destroyed by the terrorists". And, if anyone dares challenge their paranoid view of life, they constantly bring up the 9/11 tragedy eight years ago.
Seriously, its time for this country to re-evaluate some of the dumb*ss things we are doing. Two examples for me would be (1) forcing everyone to take their shoes off in an airport security line before they get on a flight; and (2) the restriction on bringing anymore than one ounce containers of fluids on airplanes (or is it three ounces? I don't know). Exactly, one person, one time tried to bring a "shoe bomb" on an airliner and that person was stopped before he could do anything. The fluid rule is based on a hypothetical situation that someone, someplace could design a bomb that might not be detected. Again, this is another event that has never occurred in real life.
The reality is that all of us take much greater risks just driving to the airport to take our flight.
I'd like to see us "downsize" TSA and make some of these people actually go get a real job for a living. This would be a job where they actually have to do something productive to earn a living. A job where you don't automatically accumulate a good hourly wage, health insurance, and retirement for just showing up in the morning.
I went to school in the '70s and we were not permitted to have pocket knives or aspirin on our person or in our lockers. Not saying students obeyed this but it was the policy.
And what was wrong with the parents of this child? How did they not know he was taking this to school? Or did they think it was okay? They should have just told him to leave it at home where he could use it for meals there. I believe it almost always comes back to the parents. If they would exercise responsibility and common sense the schools would not have to waste their time and resources on discipline and could focus on education.
Of course it is going to far. The logical response would have been to remove the item, notify the parents discreetly and to leave kid and parents happy with the discretionary and diplomatic genious of the principal. Instead, the school and district have looked like buffoons lacking a single modicum of common sense.
The rules were put in because White America lost any ability to discuss any such matters with Black America and more specifically Poor Inner-City Edgy Black America. Afraid of confrontations over switch blades, home made knives or drugs, schools haev instituted no tolerance policies across the board with applications to all colors, creeds, and levels of wealth. Of course, when hands are tied so definitely, they will gain refuge from those edgy inner city incidents, but they will cause make like miserable for the other 99% of incidents, which is exactly what has happened over the years.
The reaction will be as follows: 20% of fence sitters, will pull their kids out of public schools and send them to private schools, 10% will home school, and 10% will seek common sense in another school district. In the end, many lose. The kid loses and must live with the knowledge that he was at the heart of so much grief. That alone should shame adults into doing the right thing...but they do not. The parents lose since they now must bear the cost of a search, prep and new education. The host school loses thrice: money from fewer butts in seats; looking moronic before the eyes of the world; losing a golden opportunity to teach a child a valuable lesson: how to use discretion.
The pain this causes will be real if the decisions are held up. Let's hope the parties involved reach an amicable compromise and the kids can get back to their everyday lives. Hopefully with time, we will take stock of our collective movement toward public incompetence and re-learns how to dialogues between the races. The kid deserves better. We deserve better.
Yup.... and unfortunately this is most evident in our SCHOOLS !!
Looks like the common sense of the public majority has won out. Now it seems they have found they had better cover their politically correct left-wing a§§e§ in a hurry.

You're right, if the parents knew, then they should be held accountable. The child was a pre-schooler and doesn't really know right from wrong. He was exited to show his friends his new knife. Yes, the parents are complete idiots for letting him take a knife to school(if they knew).
Zero Tolerance has been around for over 30 years and it has not one thing to do with liberal. It has a lot of crap to do with the 99 ways to force a kid out of school. Rethink the school board. You have to change the policy. That means getting off the duff and doing something.
All of a sudden all kids became a huge scary group.
