Because it is easy to punish law abiding citizens, people who have morals and believe in doing the right thing....voluntarily.....
. . . and after all, the whole purpose of life in America is to find people to punish and exact the maximum possible punishment on them, and keep on punishing them after they have served their sentence. That's all we do. That's all C-D posters talk about. Punishing people. Even in Great Debates. Turn on the news in the morning to see who deserves to be punished today. No matter what happens, find somebody to punish. It doesn't matter who---just make sure you punish somebody. Punishment = Patriotism. If you're not in love with punishment, go to Iran or North Korea or some place, they'd be glad to have you.

and...because it is very hard and expensive to find catch try and punish criminals...
This is the case with everything...not just "guns".....We can say the same about automobiles, alcohol, motorcycles, certain types of dogs, pets, drugs, money, real-estate, sex, and health care....
Obese types will get the healthy to pay for their care......same deal. It's too hard to make some (criminally insane, lazy, stupid) people do the right thing, take care of themselves and others....so we punish those who are healthy, industrious, courteous and responsible...again....because it's easy...the path of least resistance....
Exactly, They won't complain, too busy running thier own life.
