IMHO, this facination with race only goes to further bigoted mentalities.
Well, most of us work, but they want to know for how much. And where we live, and how big is our house, and how many kids we have, and if we drive a car or use public transportation, and who is poor and who is rich, and what is our education etc... etc...
We are all Americans ( well, almost ) but that's what census is about.

There are other means for determining those thing, the same means to determine the proportions of religious and non-religious since that catagory was taken off the census.

Maybe the old fashioned way is still the easiest and most accurate?
And why someone would have a problem with determining own race?
We have to state our hair and eye color, weight and age, and answer many more question. There is nothing wrong with. Majority of population does not have any problem with that; census count is done anonymous and only for statistic purpose.

Um, scuze me, but I have never had to answer such biological questions on the census. Age, certainly, but never height/weight, eye/hair color

And if it isn't such a problem, let's bring back the religion question.

BTW, they ask for your name and the name of everyone in the household, and phone number of the head-of-household. Hardly anonyimous.

Been that way since day one, and is a major tool of any geanologist, whether professional or an amature like myself.

It is in my firmest opinion that as long as we fixate on race, bigotry will be rampant.

That's your opinion, I don't agree, but I respect it.

Thank you. The same respect is returned.

I realize perfectly that not everyone sees things as I do.

Same reason we no longer have "stewardesses" and "air hostesses". I see no point in resurrecting a long-obselete term just to appease the few who decide to continue to refer to themselves by it.

Which is precisely why "negro" should be left to rest among the annals of quaint, historical items of our lexicon that no longer enjoy widespread usage.

Every few years there is some voice in the black community, who gets fired up on what 'they' are called. Terms like colored, people of color, Afro-American, African American, etc. have been 'in favor' for a while then someone gets offended. Its also one way for someone to get attention with hopes to become a popular 'activist' in their community.

Please, other bigger ticket issues to work...

I read the original post and immediately thought exactly as you did. I have no idea why the word Negro would be offensive to anybody. I guess I should be offended by Caucasian ??

I fear we Americans of all races spend way to much time trying to figure out how to be offended so we can feel sorry for ourselves and anger towards somebody else. I have no idea why this is....but if you look around you you'll see what I mean. Sad really. We have some real problems in our society and this issue is what I would call an "artificial problem".
