why do we think all countries should be just like us?
We don't but then if they choose not to, we shouldn't be giving them free stuff, either. How much money do we have to pour into some of these places, with no signs of their living conditions improving, before we let them figure out for themselves why they're in the shape they're in? We're enablers.

When we hand over money, we don't hand it over to the people. We hand it over to that country's government. If the government is corrupt, their people won't see the money. Should we give them money again? Probably not, but again, you can't change the attitude and movement of a country by just throwing money at them. It takes times, decades, generations, to promote change.
Two countries on one island ask santo domingo why?St. Martin.St.Marteen two countries one island do well tourisim makes the countries economy work..My brother flew his plane into Haiti he was greeted by machine guns he left and said he would never go back.
I invite you to compare the development of Haiti and Liberia. Both, in different ways, were created as states for freed slaves. Neither was colonized in about two centuries. Both have a similar tropical climate. Liberia had, until the past decade, a peaceful political climate, compared to Haiti's, which has been fraught with near-continuous political abuse and disorder. Haiti has about ten times the population density. Liberia had rubber, a significant export resource, as well as iron ore. One would think, on its face, that Liberia would have a significant advantage. Yet, Haiti's per-capita GDP is $422, and Liberia's is less than $400, and was never higher, even before the turmoil of recent years.
Why Does It Take So Long For Some Countries to Evolve?
1. Government corruption (they don't follow their own rules)
2. Lack of individual liberties (not necessarily a free exchange of ideas)
3. Lack of stability (coups are more commonplace)
4. Questionable guarantees of property rights (the government could seize your factory/farm/house/auto company/multinational bank/etc)
Haiti was a French colony of slaves. The French were notoriously bad colonizers, if there is such a good thing as a good one. They didn't educated their people, they didn't build infrastructure, they simply used the natural resources and brought slaves from West Africa to exploit those resources. However, it has been a long time since French control. Since then, there has been a series of corrupt, sadistic dictators that have ruled the country. The US did have control for about 20 years, 1915-1934. In general, their country has been a mess throughout its history: French colonialization, a rebellion leading to independence, a series of coups, US control, a series of brutal dictators...
I understand government corruption but then you rise up and overthrow that government or ask other countries to help you overthrow that government, right? The location of that country (Haiti) for tourism tells me it could be a contender. And the great thing about a tourism economy is the jobs it provides for the uneducated as well as the educated.
Tourism requires an investment in infrastructure, which nobody is willing to make in a country that has no reliable utilities, an incorrigibly corrupt government, and doesn't even speak English. In fact, if you controlled a large investment pot, how quick would you be to risk it in Haiti?
The bottom line is that it is not fault of the Haitian people. They arrive there through an unfavorable accident of birth, negligible education opportunities, and the deck stacked against them from the start.
Really, exactly who do you blame for the plight of the country? Each Haitian person, as a component of the whole?
