After reading all of these posts I see why there is a division in perspective. As an American i find myself fighting to stay afloat and success is a further thought. i wish that there was more opportunity in this country. We import more than we export, there is a high dependency on other countries. Plus education isn't held very high. There is a true stratification in the world of education. Our lack of manufacturing and creation coupled with poor education leaves us weak as a nation. i understand why the notion of moving else where is so prevalent, but my question is why not make here better?? one answer I received was in America is that we have to step on someones face to get ahead. Now think this type of thinking runs deep, no wonder we are so individualistic. Also elitists type people turn their noses up at those who seem to not fair as well. Are you wondering what all of this has to do with the post ??? well simply put we as Americans we have to make America better, we cant run somewhere else for we will still be treated as Americans. Only in America are we the in group everywhere else we are the out group. People love where they are from and they work to make it better so what are we doing trying to run over there France or anywhere else ?????? Just thoughts

As a middle aged American who failed to make it big (at all), I have developed a covert plan of action.

Bend over and kiss your dreams good-bye. Learn to like the advantages of beginning to resembling a 3rd world nation. Realize that cars with 100K+ miles are just well broken in. Less rich food means a slimmer waist. Going out is fraught with danger. The most fun one can have has always been...in bed.

Me too.

I'm not moving anywhere. My family has lived here for generations, and my friends and relatives all live here.

Having said that, I do recognize that in some other countries - especially the wealthier developed northern European ones - the citizens enjoy a very high standard of living and get better vacation time, health care, retirement options, and most of all: live in safer and cleaner cities - than we do. Having traveled around the world to both "Third World" countries and developed nations I cannot ignore the fact in a few other countries the quality of life is not only as good as ours, but better.
