Okay, just got a letter that one of our credit cards is going to be sending our private information to India.

We've had this account for years and always appreciated that the store was very 'American' and even sponsored some big sporting events.

So evidently they're going to outsource the credit card handling and it's going to India.

I know how I feel....what would you think?

Good for them. By outsourcing, they are lowering their cost of doing businesses. And there is a 0.000000000000000000000000000001% chance that they will pass that savings on to you.

I won't say here, if you have an account you should be notified.

But the notification is a recent development, if your data was ALREADY going out of the country, they don't have to tell you.

I wonder if you called if they would tell you?

You would probably get a, "I don't know", type of answer...

Since you are forewarned I would suggest closing your account.
I would guess that some credit card companies have already done this and do not plan on letting the consumer know.

Overall, the business practices of most credit card companies is outrageous, this is a very minor point. I have had a very successful relationship with my CC company, there have been no surprises, and no misunderstanding that weren't resolved easily and quickly and courteously. I would not throw that away and switch my business to an unknown, for no other reason than because I am scared of people in a foreign country where they do business.

Please don't think I have anything against Indians in any way! I have issue with my private data going someplace where the laws/regulations of the United States are not the law of the land.

Obviously, in India, Indian laws are the most important. I'm ticked that I'm doing business with a company who is chosing to send my private data outside of the US to a country with different data protection laws.

My concerns are: If anything happens (if my data is stolen), who do you complain to? How is anything resolved?

I would be more worried about what these search engines in the USA can do.

This one ain't the average search engine! Check out http://www.spokeo.com

Punch your name in there and let it fly.

Unbelievable the stuff that will come up!
