Default Human Placentophagy

So I heard from a friend of a friend who is saving her placenta after birth to feast upon. Is this a common thing to do in modern societies? What are the benefits to it, besides a free meal?

I believe it's a more personal than nutritional decision.

The idea of eating something as benign and commonplace as a booger sort of grosses me out...

It actually takes 9 months to stew in the human body, so not as common as the booger that I can manufacture in 3 minutes of dry weather.

Also it's considered vegan: The Log Blog: Placenta Party.

I really meant that the more common practice of merely eating a booger kind of grosses me out and the idea of eating a placenta makes me want to vomit. The sight or participation in the practice would make me vomit. I have an aversion to the incidental, accidental or purposeful consumption of any human tissue, excretion or fluid, with at least two exceptions that shall remain unnamed.

I can't believe people-including myself-are actually responding to this. I heard saving the placenta was good in case the baby or future babies needed something from the cells. BUT EATING IT---GROSS AND DISCUSTING, dam I'll not eat for at least a couple of days.

Iron. Like liver, the placenta has a great deal of it, and a postnatal woman needs it. It also contains oxytocin, which stimulates milk production.

This is what happens when women watch too much "Nature" on PBS while they are pregnant.
