FORTUNE -- Every day more than 285,000 FedEx team members deliver some 7 million packages to 220 countries. Every 24 hours our aircraft fly 500,000 miles, and our couriers travel 2.5 million miles.
Great. When I see Mr. Smith explain to his stockholders that there will be no dividends for the nex 5-10 years so he can install alternative energy generation at every station where vehicles from the Fed-Ex fleet parks so his ground fleets can be mostly self sufficient. When I see Fed-Ex using only hydrogen powered semi tractor trailers on the interstates and highways and when I see Fed-Ex planes using solely biofuesl in their cargo planes, then Mr. Smith can have a discussion about energy policy for the rest of the country.
I agree with Mr. Smith that this is a matter of national security; however, actions on the part of his company will speak louder than words. Thirty some vehicles isn't squat it is nothing more than symbolism over substance.
i'm not sure about FedEx, but UPS has made great strides to using alternative fuels and designing smarter routs to greatly reduce consumption. it's not going to be flipping a switch overnight, but it's in their best interest as a company for profits to move off of the fluctuations of oil also.
The increase in sunk costs necessary to purchase an electric vehicle would be offset by the reduction in fuel costs over the amortization period. If FedEx were to join the growing trend of businesses that are adding solar and wind alternatives to the company infra-structure, fuel costs could drop even more.
