Default solar and/or green housing

I see there are a variety of people out there- I currently live in Wyoming, and would like to build a smaller home. Smaller acreage too- maybe 10 acres. I would like a mild climate, with about the same cost of living as I have here. I would like to look into solar homes, or 'green' housing, but green might be out of my price. Do any of you have any experience? Want to build anywhere from 900sf to 1400sf. have a place in San Antonio TX, and do NOT want to build there! Drier climate better for me. I think California is out of the question. Both for cost and crime/earthquakes. Want to stay towards the west. Any solar/greenie brains out there? Thanks
