Does not really work when you are near the equator ...
South of the equator ?
Never met anybody worried about this fact from down there ...

Not quite right. In the AM 12 is about pointed South. In the PM it's about pointed North.

It's taken me five years, but my wife has finally figured that out. It's amazing how her direction sense has drastically improved since then. I no longer get panicked calls needing help with directions.

The watch-as-compass thing doesn't work so well near the poles either. It's worked reasonably well for me between 25 & 45 degrees latitude though.
