HOW MUCH DOES ONE PENNY OF THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE TAX GENERATE FOR THE HIGHWAY TRUST FUND?

The federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel fuel currently generates about $1.75 billion of revenues per penny of tax. Of this total, $1.4 billion per penny of tax is deposited into the Highway Account and used to finance the federal highway program. The remaining $350 million per penny of tax is deposited into the Mass Transit Account and used to finance the federal public transportation program.

HOW MANY MILES OF ROADS ARE THERE IN THE U.S.?

Currently, there are 4.09 million miles of road in the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration, including Alaska and Hawaii. The core of the nation’s highway system is the 47,432 miles of Interstate Highways, which comprise just over one percent of highway mileage but carry one-quarter of all highway traffic. The Interstates plus another 175,514 miles of major roads comprise the National Highway System, which carries most of the highway freight and traffic in the U.S.

I'd agree with him except for the implementation. If every road was toll road it is effectively a per mile tax. There is better ways to implement it than setting up tolls.

If you have a per mile tax based on the weight of the vehicle that is the fairest way to distribute the costs. To some degree this is how the fuel tax works now but it's no longer a workable system.

I paid the $50 fee when I registered my Tesla. The clerk told me that it entitled me to free charging at certain stations. How can I find out where these stations are in Colorado Springs?
