The Next "EV Problem" (hahahahaha, ahhhh)

===========================
Tesla and EV dominance in Norway causes shortage of fossil fuel cars to tax

Tesla and other electric vehicles are beginning to dominate the roads in Norway, leaving very few internal combustion engine (ICE) cars to tax. The “problem” has been long foreseen by those supporting the EV revolution. As one of the first countries to face the challenge, Norway might set an example for future nations on how to handle EV dominance.

Last month, 11,579 new passenger cars were registered in Norway, 1,369 (-10.6%) fewer cars compared to October 2020, as per the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

Zero-emission cars made up 70.1% of the auto market in Norway last month, with a total of 8,116 new registrations, up +3.1% year-over-year. The total used imported zero-emission cars registered in October went up +62.4%, too.

The EV transition has created a gaping hole in Norways’s annual revenue. According to the previous Norwegian government—a center-right coalition which was replaced with a center-left minority government in October—EV dominance was creating a $2.32 billion hole in Norway’s annual revenue.

This is a bigger problem in the EU because of the higher gas taxes. I've seen some proposals to levy extra taxes on EVs. From subsidy to levy in a heartbeat.

This is why here in our state (WA) the EVs are charged an annual additional registration fee of $100 to cover their share of the road tax normally collected by gas tax.

We have a similar annual fee in California in our vehicle registration. Our Fiat 500e registration is about 50% more than our 20 year old VW Golf TDI, and our Tesla Model S registration is 3X more than the Fiat.

Seems like a simple problem to solve in the EU.

LOL.

The average person buys $1,500 in gas each year. About 20% of gas cost ($0.50 on a $2.50 gallon). That is $300 per year. $100 is not even close. A good start but not even close to what is normaly collected in gas tax.

Norway is a country 1/1000th the area of the US with 1/60th our population. Their electric power comes almost exclusiely from hydo- (essentially free after the facilities are built)...while a gallon of gas cost ~$8 there...

How much brains does it take to figure out the EV has a niche to fill there?

Here, EVs account for 1 out of every 50 vehicles sold each year...If people wanted them, they could get them, but apparently they don't want them, even with the unfair govt incentives encouraging their sale....and 90% (I bet) of those that are bought are done so merely to signal virtue. THAT is dumb.

Loss of revenue from falling fuel sales as EVs become more prominent in the mix will be recouped by additional taxes elsewhere...I understand that with this new socialism bill the House just passed, with it's half billion dollar incease in IRS funding, also provides for a new, simple Form 1040--It will have just two lines on it-- "How much money did you make last year?"..and.."Send it to us."

Would you settle on 1/25th of the area?
I missed a lot of geography classes myself....but...

This would never be a real problem in the US. It would simply be a tactic to raise revenue and spend more. There is so much fat to cut in the US Federal Budget that spending cuts could easily cover any of these little revenue losses that may pop up. But nobody bribes politicians to cut spending so that isnt an option. They choose to divide and conquer by saying "Hey, this guy isnt paying his fair share for his electric car." The people who dont own electric cars are like "Yeah! Tax that jerk more because he isnt paying his fair share." Maybe someone driving an electric car says "Hey! Protecting access to oil costs many billions of dollars, they should pay more!" It is all about pitting one group against another and ultimately squeezing every group.
