I know there are green grocery stores i.e. organic or co op's but will there ever be a green department store or god forbid a ''green walmart'' type(s) out there and if not now then in the future??

A new store opened up in an existing, old building here in Minneapolis, that's green. The building itself can't operate "green" but the items in the shop are supposedly "green." I've not been in it. It's called Twin Cities Green. www.twincitiesgreen.com

That's cool to see the link Simple Living as that would be great if they could go nationwide in the future as i'd check them out.
Johnnygreenmart is re-doing their site. I read they have removed a considerable amount of products that they feel didn't truly fit the green criteria. They seem to be more than a gimmick like the other ones and require all products to be made by other coops or green entreprenuers and are focused on each store selling products from the local community. They are a employee owned coop and have plans for a nationwide launch of 56 stores in 2009.
I don't know of a green department store, but I've shopped green in Pittsburgh (PA); Belfast (ME); Brattleboro (VT); Northampton (MA) and even NYC.
Generally the items they sell are clothes, paper products, cosmetics (hair, etc) and bags.
I loved that co-op in Brattleboro! Wish we lived closer... if we did, I would do all my shopping there. We used to shop at a nice small locally owned health food store chain in the DC area, called MOM (my organic market). Purchased wind energy for their stores and had lots of local items, the best organic produce, I miss them
A lot of stores now want to jump on the "green" bandwagon and it is purely a marketing ploy.

Yes, actually the new Wal-mart near me is "green."
The store uses a ton of sklylights and the lights don't come in the freezers in the frozen food aisles unless you walk close to them, among other things. They also carry more local and better produce than other grocer in our area except maybe Earth Fare. I am not a Walmart fan by any means, but this store so far is nice.

I think Ikea is one of the greenest furniture stores on the planet right now
