Daily Herald | Lawmakers hope to approve Great Lakes compact

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- A compact to prevent the diversion of water from the Great Lakes has widespread support in Congress and a strong chance of winning approval by the end of the year, lawmakers said Wednesday.

House and Senate leaders from the region said they had not detected any significant opposition to the plan and would aggressively push to complete the process this year to provide more protections for one of the world's largest sources of fresh water...

We're fighting something similar down here in Florida.

The middle of our state (Orlando, etc.) is experiencing serious water shortages and they want to drain our river (Saint Johns) - our American Heritage River!

It's getting scary hearing about all these water shortage issues and the ensuing fights over the bodies of water .

North Carolina as well. A lawsuit has been filed by South Carolina because of the way NC handles its water, creating an impact on our neighboring state.
3 new groups join lawsuit over Catawba River water | WWAY NewsChannel 3 | Wilmington NC News

Information can be found in other articles that provide more details, but the gist is that two towns facing increased development don't have the water to support the increased population. The people of the Catawba state that their own future needs will be affected. Also, the poobahs who govern the county in which Concord resides had the nerve to provide incentives for a freakin' private water park (only the people who stay in the accompanied hotel) which will gulp 28000 gallons of water each day .

Now, when it comes to a need for water, we're just going to have to share; I hope the allocation is fare. But if you're going to fritter away the water supply on something like water parks and golf courses (and I could give a rat's butt that the courses say they use water in an eco-friendly manner) then you don't really need it.

Silverwing...

North Carolina is another state people are flocking to, so I can see the connection between increased population and further stresses on the water supply.

Funny you mentioned the water park. We have an enormous planned development being built in St. John's county - so big it is going to be its' own city with its' own zip code - and of course the developers are touting it as a "nature" development . They too are putting in a huge water park - 15 acres big! It's going to be the biggest water park in NorthEast Florida. It's just so incredibly wasteful and so anti-nature .

Good. Get yer grubby hands off the Great Lakes ...

You want water? Move your factories back to the Great Lakes (where they were in the first place -- a lot of the buildings are still there, waiting to be reused) where there's plenty of water.

I'm sure Indiana will oppose it ... unfortunately, our state Capital isn't located on Lake Michigan ... they could care less about anything having to do with the lake I used to spend many weekends on or in.
