I hope this isn't a dumb question I know that #1 and #2 are recyclable but what about #3-6? Can I put those in the recycle bin too?

Check with your local recycling/waste company. Most areas only recycle 1 & 2, but others are getting more enlightened and also accept some of the others. If they won't take it in the normal bin, your area may have scheduled drop offs for recycling the others.

That's why you have to take the lids off bottles... the bottle is 1 or 2, but the lid is usually 4 or 5. If you don't take the lid off before you put it in the bin, they'll just throw it in the landfill at the transfer station during the sort.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll do that tomorrow. I hate throwing those things away if there's a chance they could be recycled.

I also use the cups/tubs that yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc come in (usually #4 or #5) as starter pots for indoor seedlings and for arts and crafts... if you can recycle, you might be able to find ways to reuse them

My city also only takes recycling 1 and 2 from the curb, but I can recycle beyond that by bringing recyclables to drop off points.

Check earth911 to find drop-off points in your area:
