For those who aren't racked by enough environmental guilt to buy a hybrid, driving green can mean any number of readily available and easy-to-implement solutions that can increase your gas mileage.
I have no guilt when I am driving either one of my diesel trucks, or Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Limited with the V-8, or my restored International Harvester Scout II with a 304 V-8.
Driving like an idiot has more impact than just on gas mileage, brakes probably tops the list but it will cause excessive wear and failure for other parts too.

There has been a lot of chatter lately by the media, economists, and some politicians about legalizing pot (why - big tax dollars to gain).
Ever drive behind someone poking along? They are either elderly, new driver, or a driver who is stoned. Since pot has such a calming effect, perhaps it needs to be legalized to encourage "green driving".
If you want to drive like an idiot and get great gas mileage use a 1000 cc or bigger motorcycle. The result will be less gas burned and fewer idiot drivers on the road. Powerful motorcycles are the least forgiving of mistakes of all the ground based transport so indelicate use is self eliminating. BTDT.

My motorcycle is a 1500 V-Twin, and I'm not sure whether you just complimented me or insulted me.
Actually, I just got home yesterday from a rather long drive on the cycle. I drove it hard, because I was pressed for time both coming and going. It normally gets 47-48 mpg, but on this particular trip it got 42-43. Under the circumstances, that was a price I was willing to pay.
Sometimes we just make choices...
That said, the truth is that if everybody would simply drive an average of 5 mph slower, Americans as a whole would save a whole lot of gas. There's no investment in parts, and the results are pretty much guaranteed.
Quite a few years ago, we had a 91 Dodge Grand Caravan. On a 2-lane road, at 55-60 mph, it would consistently get 22-23 mpg. On the Interstate, at 70-75 mph, mileage would always drop down to 18-19 mpg. I'll admit that, when on the Interstate I always drove Interstate speed. But the numbers don't lie, and we know what we could do.
I think it's a good idea, I see so many people jam on the gas pedal at each light to almost race people to the next light a block down...I don't see the big deal. More wear and tear, more gas used, and no real gain for it.
I drive SUV's and Pickups. I will not get one of the hybrids.
Why not? You don't like spending less on gas, or you don't want something better on the environment?
