ANAHEIM, Calif. — The world's solar companies gathered here recently amid the nation's largest solar market under a brilliant sun – and the looming shadow of China.
China leads the world in making solar cells, the key component in solar panels, many of which are exported to the U.S.
Wind and solar are not cost-effective compared to Coal and Nuclear--without Carbon taxes. China will probably choose not to hobble their economy by leveling carbon taxes, thus they will remain dependent on coal for their baseload power. They are aggressively pursuing nuclear power as well.
That said, if you visit China, you'll not see a single roof without a solar water heater. I also saw a solar panel dealer in the Kashgar Sunday market.
Also, before someone comes along crying about how smart the Chinese are for not worrying about the environment, every major industrial Chinese city is choking on toxic clouds of pollution. If you visit, you will be astonished at how terrible the air quality is. It really does reduce the quality of life.
They are getting ready for Cap&Trade. That will start the business rolling.
China will not be using them..they will be exporting them.
We even have a US company up and moving to China as they think China will be the center of solar manufacturing.

This has absolutely nothing to do with China suddenly becoming an environmentally friendly country. It has to do with them producing cheap crap and exporting it.

Same game. Different day.
At least it's some crap that we can use, this time.

Unfortunately Charles that need arises from government mandates and subsidies. These solar power plants and wind farms being built are only being built because of heavy tax breaks, subsidies and other incentives from the Feds, state and local government. The federal subsidy alone for solar/wind in 2007 was almost 1/3 the retail cost of electricity. On top of that you need to add in state and local incentives which are substantial too.
Effectively US taxpayer dollars will be subsidizing production of expensive solar panels that will be shipped here from China that will raise the cost of energy we pay while they are building a new coal plant every couple of weeks that will provide cheap energy.
Actually that's a nail in the coffin..this new green movement brought on by Cap&Trade was suppose to create all these new "green" jobs. They just didn't say those jobs would be outside the US.
If all we do is import them then I can only see installation and service jobs in the US.
