I never received an incentive other than the satisfaction of knowing that all of the useless refuse which was being manufactured and polluting the environment was going to be reduced. To each his own.
Money was a tool for incentive. It is a "benefit" to doing something.

I can promise you that I can get more people to do good of their own choice if they are rewarded for it.

You go out and TELL people what they MUST do. Go ahead and charge them, penalize them and demand conformity form them.

I will go out and encourage them, offer incentives to do such where they will be rewarded. Where they can make their own choices in the process.

My result is a free system that shows leaps and bounds in its results.

Your system is an oppressive system that strangles the life from its cause and erodes any chance of its success.

The reason you can not see my point is because you do it for your own personal reasons and think everyone should conform to your view. Because of this, forcing people to your view is acceptable because... well... you agree with it. You see nothing wrong with confiscating money, fining, and mandating to serve your goals because... well as I said, you do it already and for your own reasons and everyone should do it for your reasons because your reasons are superior and therefore any detriment to those who may disagree is acceptable.

This is the core of the problem with the environmental movement.

What could be a system that encourages people to do well, to support the cause and help it excel is simply a system filled with self interest, bureaucratic organization and oppressive dictation.

No, I did not stop because I was not getting paid, I stopped because I despise everything that movement does in its distorted ideal of good.

Lastly, there is no "To each their own" in your system. That implies choice and there is no choice in these systems, only mandates of self proclaimed do gooders.

I don't see the point in caring, it's a self limiting system even if we go hog wild.

People will consume what they wish to consume in limit to their resources, and as the resources become limited they become more expensive. People who have money will complain a great deal and deal, those who do not will be priced out. It happened with oil after the last run up, when the US complained and groaned about price at the pump while destitute countries starved and seethed with unrest without being able to afford petroleum based fertilizers. Then demand starts to go down.

There is no point in doing what one thinks is best, as equilibrium will stay were it will rest.
