My experience with diesel engines (limited to trucks with a powerstroke under the hood) has been that the engines are more durable, more reliable, and more efficient. It takes about 80,000 miles for the engine to really break-in. You should see a noticeable, although probably not mind-blowing, increase in fuel efficiency at about that time.
Another poster had a good point about "having a reason to get a diesel". If you don't have a good reason to have one it you may be sorry down the road.
A diesel will not run on "just anything" but Rudolf Diesel envisioned peanut oil as the fuel his engine would run on.
