Ultimately it depends whether or not you want to risk having this violation on your record. Should you receive another citation, the first thing the Judge/Assistant DA will look at is your driving record. Having a clean record, or a record with 0 points will greatly improve your chances of having another charge reduced/dismissed/or receiving a PJC. Arbyunc is correct that NC DMV will asses 3 points on your license if convicted of running a stop sign. But, insurance and driver's license points differ. For this charge, you would receive 1 insurance point, which generally equates to a 25% premium increase depending on your past driving record. My advice - full disclosure, I work for one - get a lawyer who knows how the judges and ADA's in the county you were charged operate and hope to walk away with a clean record (0 points), which might be in the form of an improper equipment charge.

I would highly recommend paying the lawyer. If it's anything like it is elsewhere (VA or TX), you pay the attorney, they handle EVERYTHING. You probably will never have to appear in court at all. Then the court will plead it down to a Improperly Maintained Vehicle or so, then you pay court costs and fines associated with that. It's a little expensive but well worth the insurance premium savings over the next 3-5 years.

And yes, if the system allows for it, why not follow the system? In Houston it was a complete racket and there must have been kickbacks flying all over the place, you paid the lawyer who's office was right next to the traffic court $80 and your ticket goes POOF! No record of it anywhere AND no additional court costs. Not a bad deal for a $200 speeding ticket.
