In need of local residents advise. My wife & I along with our 8yr old son. Will be moving to the area once our home in Chicago sells. We currently live in a white-coller town, where a 1200sq ft home will cost you over $450k and a school district that is rated in the top 10 in the Country. I have been researching homes online for a similar type setting. With no success. We are looking to downsize in living expense, so our goal is under $300. But it has to be in the city limits where public transportation is available. I am loosing my vision so we need to find a pedestrian friendly neighborhood.
Buena Vista is one of the nicest areas in the Winston Salem city limits with public transportation. It is a well established neighborhood with lots of trees and nice landscapes. It has sidewalks as well, which I would say makes it pedestrian friendly. There are mostly older homes there, but the property values continue to appreciate nicely. There are currently 26 listings in the $152 - $310k range. About $265k is probably the average. Hope that helps. You can PM me if you like if you have further questions.
Doc
We have looked in the Ardmore area. Yes there are some very nice homes, but the problem I have is only 1/3 maybe 1/2 of the Residents take care of their homes. We looked at a beautiful home during an open house. And I would have bought the house. But when I looked at the neighbors I was shocked. The homes on both side were run down, dogs barking like crazy, and a junk car in the back yard that the dogs used as a dog house. The grass along their chain link fence had to be 12/15" tall. That is not a community for us. My buddy's joke with me that we live in Pleasentville. Everyone uses Landscaping Co's to maintain their lawns, except for me. Everyones home is immaculate. We take a lot of pride in our homes, and our neighborhoods I know it's going to be hard to find that perfect neighborhood, but I beleive it is out there somewhere.
We are also moving to W-S this summer from the Naperville area. We looked in Sherwood Forest which is close to Buena Vista and has good schools. Most homes are older ranch homes but nice style and well-maintained. There are 2-story homes available also. I know there were several homes in the 300's but don't know about under that price. Not sure about transportation but it is in the city limits.
Good luck with your move; we think its going to be a great place to live.
If you're looking for an in-town location in Winston-Salem with good access to public transportation, you'll find yourself in the neighborhoods mentioned, all of which are a bit older - and which can sometimes present the challenges you describe. With some patience and guidance, you can find the right streets to give you the feel you're hunting for! And the more you visit, I hope you'll find that the differences we have are the biggest part of what makes it so great to live here!
I grew up there (live in Charlotte now) but anything from Ardmore to West End to even Washington Park is very pede-friendly and the folks are so nice. (do I sound homesick!?) Buena Vista is nice too, Sherwood Forest, etc. (HINT: pronounce it BYOO-nah VIHsta, or youll get run out of town on a rail...) hahahahahahah
We are looking to relocate to Clemmons outside of Winston-Salem, does anyone have any imput on that area?
