Some comments on the area in general, and Kernersville, Stokesdale, and Madison - Mayodan in particular. We have enjoyed living in Summerfield (2 yr), downtown Greensboro (4 yr), Stokesdale (8 yr), and now north High Point (3 yr). We came to the Triad area in part because of it's positive diversity. We are a biracial family, and have felt right at home in all these areas. We enjoyed Milwaukee when the kids were toddlers, but our move to the Triad has been great, in part because of the racial and ethnic diversity. The whole Triad is rich in diversity, with local variation, but its not all bad.

I can't comment in detail about your specific needs (see original post), but there are many good options within a 40 minute radius of Kernersville, in the center of the Triad. The roads around here are reasonable, so you can get to almost anywhere you plan to work in good time.

We have enjoyed getting to know Kernersville over the past 10+ years because our church is there. Even in that short time, the city has expanded and development continues. Friends who first moved there in the '70s almost don't recognize it now. Further north, such as Walnut Cove, Madison - Mayodan, Oak Ridge and Stokesdale, the pace may be slower, but suspect expansion is coming.

Stokesdale is a great community. We moved there to enjoy the country and living in the woods. The kids and our pets had all kinds of room to run around and play safely. Our neighbors were always friendly, and people always greeted us kindly at the local grocery store and post office. I would not have left Stokesdale, except for a specialized school need for our three teens. Also, as they approached their teens, they felt too isolated, so now we're back in the city!

Last tip: if you like the country, and might not mind driving 40+ minutes for shopping or work, don't overlook Madison and Mayodan. They are two of the nicest communities I have ever known, after working there for several years.

Lots of positive diversity, in a thriving region. Thanks!

I appreciate your input. My family and I are wanting/needing to move in 2 years (for better schools, bigger house, more room) and are looking into Stokesdale, Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Madison, and Mayodan, among other small towns in the area. We have an idea of what those areas are like, having driven around a few of them, but it's good to hear from someone who's actually lived there.

I think your best bet is to look around the area first. I think that a lot of what has been referred to here as "diversity" is really a clash of different social and economic groups more than races alone.

A lot of places that show up as "undiverse" may be from a very different social or economic group than yours. A lot of the really small towns, in particular, you may find that you may not have as much in common with the residents in your area as you may initially think.

If you're unsure, I would rent first to check out the area.

I find that where I live (Mebane) it is MUCH more diverse than where I moved from (NE Mass.) yet it is quieter and much more friendly (and I was a life-long Mass. native). Ridiculously loud bikes, "boompah cars" and the like are, though not unknown here, much less common and the folks who own them tend not to run them at 3 AM like they did in the "upscale" community I left in MA.

In fine, there is no substitute for looking around to find your comfort level.

Default Follow Up

Although we would love to make the Triad home, we received an offer we couldn't refuse, and will instead be moving to Burlington, Vermont, which is another great place, albeit one with a rough winter!

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to post helpful information. There's nothing like Southern hospitality

my husband and i are truck drivers and just got offered a dedicated run out of browns summit nc. can anyone tell us about the area around here and where we may want to settle? we do not need to live in an all white area. we like diversity and get along with everyone. but we want a safe area where we can leave our home for extended periods of time and everything still be there when we return. also, we would like to know if this area is truck friendly? any place to park a big rig for a day or two when we are home? we want to live within 10-20 miles of browns summit or in brown summit but really know nothing about the area.
