Malls do not serve cities. They serve regions.

Yeah, that's pretty impressive. They have a GAP, a Hot Topic, and even a Gamestop. That's real high-end stuff.

Look, I'm sure Richmond is a great place to shop, but it's not like it's miles ahead of the Triad. We have plenty of good shopping here.

No way! Hot Topic???
Well, Granny, tell Ellie May & Jethro to put on their Sunday best. We're takin' a trip to Short Pump!

That's a pretty weak argument, and it has nothing to do with my post. I merely pointed out the errors in the highcotton's post regarding the relative income and education level between Richmond and Winston-Salem. He made the assertion, and I merely blew it out of the water. What I said has nothing to do with malls and what areas they may serve.

I was simply pointing out that using the income figures for a city, rather than larger geographic area, to attempt to explain regional retail demand is a flawed method.

Could it be people in W-S & Gboro do other things than just going shopping?

Congratulations for noticing this! There is plenty of shopping in W-S. There are some really great small places to eat that are difficult to find anywhere else. I can't find anything like 6th & Vine here in Charlotte. W-S has the BEST Fresh Market, some great small open air shopping centers that actually made me LIKE shopping (Thruway was always fun for me).

But through it all, W-S is a great small city that has many other things to enjoy that don't involve the mall, depending on what you like to do for fun. Not everyone wants to blow all their money buying "stuff"! We enjoyed the events offered downtown like Rock the Block, just 1 of many things to do that we found while we were there. I never went out much in New England, but I found myself out with friends all the time in W-S.

Honestly I think W-S (won't really speak for Greensboro) has enough shopping for a city it's size. Besides Hanes Mall with your typical stores Reynolda Village is another area with some unique stores. Even if they built another mall or shopping center the vast majority of it would be the same stores, I doubt you would get anything new.

Although I would like to see some new stuff on the food front and I don't necessarily mean in terms of sit down restaurants. A few months back there was talks of adding another frozen yogurt place and I am like do we really need ANOTHER one? I am temporarily living in NY right now and I've already seen a few ideas I think could work in NC.
