What are good trees to plant along a narrow strip of land between the sidewalk and the building in a townhome area? We need a tree whose root system will not damage the sidewalk or foundation.

You might get more responses if you post this in the section with garden threads, and mention that you are in NC so they understand the climate. Good luck.

Hmmm...it really depends on how much sun you get there, but any ornamental small tree would be good. Like a crape myrtle or a flowering cherry. you could also plant a conical type conifer as well.

Call the Guilford County (I assume you live in Guilford County) office of the NC Cooperative Extension, which is administered from NC State Univ. They will be familiar with the type of soil within the area and they should be able to give you advice about the types of trees you are seeking.
