I need to find a driver to take my mother to doctor's appointments during the week, as she is no longer able to drive. She is disabled but does not require special assistance (such as a wheelchair).

Legally (insurance-wise) and logistically, I am trying to determine if it makes more sense for the caretaker to transport my mother with their own car, or for the caretaker to drive my mother's car.

Does anyone have experience with this and can offer advice, including how much to pay?
Thanks!

There's this retired fellow, used to work for the dairy...
(couldn't resist)

Unless this really an all the time thing... look for a regulated and insured operator.
That could be a taxi cab company who sends the same driver every time (appt's) or a sedan service.

If it's more frequent... then you want personal references to find someone.
Then talk to your insurance agent about umbrella policies and such to protect everyone
and likely regular payroll issues too.

Good luck with this.

Contact Dean Burgess at the Northwest Piedmont Area Agency on Aging at 336.761.2111. He has volunteers who will drive seniors to appointments. Good luck!

You should contact Senior Services (Senior Services of Winston-Salem, NC), a valuable resource for seniors and caregivers. They can put you in touch with several agencies that provide free or low-cost transportation for seniors. They can also help in many other ways. This is in Winston-Salem--I don't know where you are, but I'm sure Greensboro and High Point have similar agencies.

Thank you for this information. Unfortunately she is not a senior yet, only 59 so I doubt these services would help her. But thanks, I will check them out just in case!

59 is close enough for most things. And the fact that she's disabled means she could take advantage of many of their services. For example, the Trans-aid service is available for either elderly or disabled riders (Trans-aid is not part of Senior Services--it's just one of the many resources they can direct you to). So yes, definitely contact them. They can help her.
