In each and every country and others (while there on a legal tourist visa), I did my best to communicate with servers in restaurants by pointing to pictures and using my fingers to indicated quantity. In most cases, my server did his/her best to accommodate me (in my spending money from outside the country while there on tourist visa) with at least broken English. This is the way one should treat a customer....like a human being.

In the end, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what the real intent of this sign is.
in the end?
your post is #20 in the thread but you finally figured it out eh? good for you!

he probably doesn't want them in his town either
or the country as a whole for that matter

perhaps your just fine with that prospect and all it's other ramifications as well?
it would appear so.

Just because something might be legal doesnt make it socially, morally or ethically acceptable....If I recall correctly, it wasnt that long ago that segregation was legal. Must be "the good ole days" that the owner probably longs for.

This restaurant is about 20 minutes south of us in Davidson County-we went there once for dinner. The food was nothing to brag about and not something I would go back for. It is a backwoods, "hick" restaurant and I doubt it will be around for long, just as the other several establishments that have been and gone at that address. He needs to focus on higher quality food and pulling in business, not turning them away. He is surrounded by residential and farm land so I'm sure he doesn't get much business as it is.

I agree that if people are going to move here then they need to learn English since it is the primary language but to say they need to speak "American" just shows this guy's ignorance and lack of education!

This used to be the excuse business owners used to deny black people service. By providing service to blacks, it would upset other customers, and they didn't want to upset/inconvenience the white customers.

So to say the restaurant owner wants to provide more efficient service to English speakers by denying non-English speakers service, is ... ... nonsense. It's racism pure and simple.

Perhaps he can cater the next KKK conference.

Is it just me or do a higher than average number of these incidents that make the news originate in Davidson County?

And how exactly does he know if someone in his restaurant is in the US legally or not?

BTW, the only visa I needed for the previously mentioned travel was for China.

He is no doubt a RACIST. We can sugar coat it anyway we like.
Now granted this is an english speaking country, but we should also embrace those who are from other countries and are learning our language and give them a chance or perhaps help them learn english.

And for the record I heard the way he speaks, I barely understood him...mumbling and talking all low. How about he speaks clear understandable english before he makes any demands.

Language isnt a race its a form of communication.

This site is English only, it doesn't make the owner of CD a racist as there many on this forum of different nationalities.

Can you imagine reading this forum one post in Spanish, the next post is in Russian, the next post is in German, etc.
In order to post on this site not knowing any English they need a translator website.

Same thing with this Diner if you speak a foreign language they need to have someone with them that is knowledgeable in English.
As owner stated in the video he doesn't want to deny customers.
He letting customers know English is only language he is able to communicate with.

Can you imagine if the TOS said "Only English-speaking people are allowed to post here"?

Yes, English is the default language here, and there is no duty to accommodate someone who doesn't speak English well or at all. But if someone does post here in broken English, or even in another language, I think most all of us would try to help figure out what they were trying to say.

There is a big difference between "Sorry, I don't understand your language" and "Sorry, I won't serve you if you don't speak English". Sure, it's his right to post such a sign and to follow it, but then again there's nothing illegal about being a jerk. If the guy was doing this for the reasons he says, why not put up a simple sign that says "No habla Espanol"? That doesn't alienate anyone or put up an immediate barrier to service. It would likely make the reader realize "I'd better find someone to translate".

And for that matter, how hard would it be for this guy to have his menu translated into Spanish? No, he doesn't have to do that, but it would be a much nicer gesture. Instead of immediately alienating potential customers, he could work towards accommodating them a little more. He learns a little Spanish, the Spanish-speakers learn a little English, and he has more sales. Seems like a win-win to me.
