For the first time, Greensboro's minorities outnumber white residents, 51.6% to 48.4%, census data showed. The city's African American population increased by nearly 31% in the past decade.

Despite a changing population and opportunities to learn from its history, racial tensions haven't disappeared in Greensboro, longtime residents say. On the street, residents of Greensboro acknowledge a geographic racial divide between the minority-heavy east side and the mostly white west side.

It is kind of weird that this would be posted. Is the intent to start some heated arguments so people can be banned from the board for their comments? Is this really relative to Charlotte City Data? Just sees a bit strange.

I thnk it is a legit discussion, personally - and relevant to Charlotte - a relatively close-by city.

There is a racial divide everywhere regardless of class. I was at a party last weekend that was very diverse, the black folk congregated in one area, and the white folk in another. There was some mingling in the common areas, but not much.
Its not a racist thing to say people prefer to be around people that are like them.

There's a significant racial divide in most cities in America. There's always an older area close to the central business district that was once populated mostly by European Americans but after white flight it became populated by minorities and the former residents usually move further away from the city core and prefer to live in surrounding areas.

That area now populated by minorities (mostly African American) and is considered one of the poor and less desirable areas of the city. Example West Charlotte or my old town Kinston, NC the eastern part is mostly black, poor, and rundown. These situations tend to be really bad in cities like Baltimore and Detroit where those cities are extremely poor and surrounded by richer suburbs which they cannot annex and draw tax dollars from but people in those suburbs still use the city services and amenities. North Carolina cities have been able to avoid this due to the state's lax annexation laws.

One could argue that it's not really about race but more about rich vs poor, however most minorities are on average poorer than their white counterparts.

rdub1968 makes a good point about public social gatherings. Most people tend to socialize with their own when it comes to strangers. The only time I see significant interaction among multiple races is when the people are already familiar with each other. Of course there are some exceptions though.

I can tell you this, I live near Greensboro so from firsthand experience, every time you think Greensboro is making progress, it always seems to take several steps backwards! Case in point, they voted for a 70-plus guy who never had any kind of political experience as their mayor! This same person they elected mayor would then re-open a landfill in which the people (the majority of whom lives in that neighborhood are black) who live in the neighborhood near that landfill were strongly opposed to it being re-opened! If that landfill were anywhere near Battleground Avenue or Wendover Avenue (the part near I-40), that would be a non-issue! What's so disappointing about Greensboro is that this city has a lot of potential, however, it has too much of a good ol' boy mentality and until that changes, it will never amount to anything, IMHO!

Here is a problem. The Landfill is there. Will be there till it is dug up and placed some where else. Facts are facts. trash is Trash. Ship it, Burn it or bury it. Since the most cost effective measure is to bury it. It will be buried. As for the poor folk of white street. The city would only have to claim it is for the good of the city, buy there homes. Bury them in the landfill. Which by the way is still a landfill though permits and zoning. The options are always tough. Not in my backyard. But you are will to put it in someone you do not know?? here lies the problem. If all these people of white street and surrounding area could prove that zero % of their household waste, construction debris, yard waste and even the grit which is part of the waste stream of their sewer waste is not landfilled and is recycled I would say they have a case. Sorry. You choose to live there. How many (show of hands) lived there when dozens of truck dumped tons in the landfill? Who built the homes there when the landfill operated?

As for the race angle. Come on ever city has their black eyes. Get over it and move on.

What if there was a landfill near your home and they had closed it down only to re-open it, would you be singing a different tune? It's easy to say that when it's not affecting you, isn't it?
