Hi all,
My son will be attending school in Winston-Salem. We live on the west coast (far away with totally different weather!), so I'm trying to get a realistic view on how/when the weather changes from summer to fall to winter in NC. How long does the hot, humid summer weather usually last? Do things begin to cool down in Sept. or Oct.? How cool is it during the fall season? When does winter weather usually hit, and what type of weather is typical? My son is trying to decide what type of clothing and outwear to buy. Can you help us with this?
That's like asking how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop. But to try to answer. It does cool down some in September. I would have anything from a light jacket to light coat though mid November. You will find temps range widely during those months. Cold as those up north call tee shirt weather (ha,ha). Does not hit till Dec through Feb. A good coat works then. No super heavy needed. We do have those cold days. Just not many in a row.
Coldest time here is Jan-Feb.--sometimes it will get cold in Dec. To me cold is 40-50's during day and freezing or below at night. I only wear a heavy coat if it snows--hot natured though. It will usually be kind of hot (80's possible) during the day in Sept. but upper 40's at night--October is my favorite month for NC. Trees are gorgeous..crisp air, shorter days....love it!
It can be pretty darn hot into September or even early Oct (my bday is mid-Sept and it's usually hot), but the quintessential "fall weather" is in mid-late October.
It starts to cool off between mid to late october. My birthday is November 4th and I have had some pretty cold ones. The summer can be excruciatingly hot. Fall is not very cold here, you can sometimes get away with a short sleeve shirt and jeans.
