Is it true that even if you have a NC license (and it hasn't expired), it is illegal for you drive unless you have auto insurance?

I would find that hard to believe as the auto insurance covers the vehicle, not the driver and thus would be difficult to obtain insurance without a vehicle. If you have a valid license and the vehicle you're driving isn't registered to you, but does not have current auto insurance, the onus is on you if you're pulled over.

you have to present a proof of insurance when you get your DL.

You got me thinking... This is from, http://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/driver/license/#document

North Carolina law requires that you provide proof of insurance when registering your vehicle. Your vehicle must be insured by a company licensed to do business in the State of North Carolina.

Proof of liability insurance includes providing insurance documents that show your name, the effective date of policy, the expiration date of the policy, and the date the policy was issued.

Even if you do not own or drive a currently registered vehicle you may still apply for a license, but a restriction will be placed on your driver license. This restriction limits you to only driving "fleet vehicles." To remove this restriction you'll have to pay the Liability Insurance Restriction Removal, Fee: $10.00 .

Listed below are examples of documents you can use:

DMV form DL-123
An original liability insurance policy binder
An insurance card with: your name, policy number, issue and expiration date

Why don't you visit a DMV office instead of taking advice from well meaning yahoos on a forum. The whole licensing thing has gotten caught up on the patriot act laws and illegal immigration. If your transaction is not straightforward I would get competent advice.

Good Luck.

That's the best advice I've seen on this forum. Notice that this response from akwebb81 was just completely wrong.

If your license is valid (not expired or otherwise revoked/suspended) it is legal for you to permissively drive a vehicle. I could lend you my car and it is legal for you to drive it. If you are applying for a new license or applying to have a revoked/suspended license reinstated, then you must provide proof of insurance (DL-123).

It seems like you have been told a DL-123 will be required for some reason and that leads me to believe your license is not valid and if that is the case you will be required to provide proof of insurance. If you are planning to register a vehicle in your own name, you will also be required to provide proof of insurance but that has nothing to do with it being legal to drive in NC with a valid license.

Sincerely yours,

well meaning yahoo
