I'm taking my son to Winston-Salem to attend UNCSA. I'd like to stay in a decent part of town where we'll be able to find Bed Bath & Beyond and Target (to buy a few things for his dorm). There are several hotels in the Hanes Mall Blvd. area (Fairfield Inn & Suites, Courtyard Marriot, La Quinta, ...). Is this a good location to stay a couple of nights? Thanks!

Lots of big box stores around Hanes Mall! I know there is Target...I assume BB&B as well (I'm new to the area, just don't recall seeing BB&B).

When we took daughter to UNCSA, we stayed in that area, pretty sure it was La Quinta.

The guy at the front desk told us there had been some trouble at night a week or so prior so lock our doors (which we do anyway). He said only cars with unlocked doors had been bothered. Hell, that happens in the burbs.

We had no problems, and next time we spend night in W-S, we will stay there as well.

We did the same stuff, buying essentials and had no trouble. Very easy, lots of choices, You will do fine.

Yep, that's a good enough location. It's convenient to lots of restaurants and shopping.

By the way, Bed Bath & Beyond is next to Target on Hanes Mall Blvd.

You should be fine in this area, there are PLENTY of stores in this area. I've stayed in the la quinta before and didn't have any problems.

Default Hilton Garden Inn

I stayed in a few hotels when I was looking for a home in W-S. Nicest hotel I stayed at was the Hilton Garden Inn on Creekshire. Nice safe area, very close to the mall, lots of place to eat nearby. Firebirds was good. Here's the address. I'm not of fan of La Quinta Inns, had a few bad hotel stays with that chain, nasty rooms. Always had good luck with Hilton Garden Inns.

oh yes, Hilton is lovely. I've only stayed in La Quinta once. I'm thankful that I did not regret it.

Just stayed at the Courtyard Marriott 2 weeks ago. Hotel was nice and clean, and the area was fine. We used the 24 hour Walgreens nearby to get a few items as well.

I stayed at the Springhill Suites last summer to interview for a graduate program at Wake and I had no reason to not feel safe. As a matter of fact, I left with a positive impression of the area.

Firebirds is a good place to eat, on HMB. You might also like Village Tavern or Blue
