Hi, posting from Durham. I have a friend in Winston-Salem who is very down & out. Has dealt with a lot of problems in his life, many that were forced on him by other people. He has a few friends there who give him shelter & help him get by.

I am trying to help him think of shoestring businesses he could try for supporting himself. I thought of washing cars, cleaning houses, walking dogs, doing laundry & mowing grass. He's had little success finding jobs, as many people are.

Do any of you in W-S know of other kinds of services people there need, anything particular to W-S? Are there many temporary services for unskilled labor? He said he'd been to 1 of those with no luck.

I am thinking he may be better off if he can find some niche of his own & work for himself. That would be a great shot in the arm for his sagging spirits too. But if a temp service has something for him that's good too.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Forsyth County has a Temporary Assistance (TEAM) program that might be able to help. It's accessible through the county website. A good place to go would be the local library in Winston Salem. They may have programs or lists of resources that might be of use. For example, my library here in Wake Co. has Joblink people that come in twice a week to assist people. I'm not too familiar with services in Forsyth, but they probably have something similar.

Tough market. But, there are jobs out there. Tell him to hit some of the local paint store or lumber yards. I am sure that he could pick up something if he is will to work. Finding a business to go into is not going to help him do anything.

In the past I know HBI has used Debbie's Staffing to fill temp positions at their DC.
