we are planning on moving to mt airy from indiana. what can anyone tell us, good or bad? weather looks to be better, especially winter. how humid is it in the summer? we'll probably look for an apt, don't want to do yard work any more. we are retired, could work p/t if needed. any apt info would be appreciated. does anyone know anything about globe tobacco lofts? thier website makes them look nice. we'd like to stay around $600/mo. rent. we'd also consider pilot mountain or another small town in the area. want to be near shopping, library etc., and within an hour of entertainment, probably winston-salem. any help is greatly appreciated.

we selected the mt airy area after visiting a couple times. we like the mountains a lot, just don't want to be up in the snow in wintertime. having the blue ridge pkwy so close is a real plus. mt airy has a hospital, we are getting older, good library system, we like to read. and some entertainment close by. it seems the job situation is not great there, but since we don't need jobs that shouldn't be a problem for us. it does seem like rental property mght be a little cheaper because of the job situation. I just wonder how much the wineries have added to the cost of living in the area? would love to get info from someone living there or who has lived there. are there areas of town we do or don't want to live in? hard to figure that from just visiting.

Default mt airy

Hi, I've lived there, for a 2 year time span, and greatly regret it. I lived in the historic district, and it seriously was full of what I can only call 'freaks'. I'm not just trying to bash the town here, we at first thought it was cute, and quaint, and our old historic house was gorgeous! But, it's SCARY there! I never felt safe...not ever. We finally moved. We now refer to it as Mt. Scary, if that tells you anything.
Goodluck.

I'm curious about this post, too. I've never heard Mt. Airy referred to as a freak hangout. All the folks I know from there seem like normal small-town people, and in my visits there I've never noticed anything to make me think otherwise. Exactly who/what are these freaks you're talking about?

I with you...this is the "freakiest" thing I've seen in Mt. Airy recently...

Maybe there were "hippies" with piercings and such hanging out on the sidewalk painting like graffiti and stuff on canvas boards, partaking in satanic rituals where they would melt glass and blow into the glass causing it to take on irregular shapes.

hippies don't bother me. I've been called one for years. I did get a good laugh from the glass blowing comment. love the little train too. figured that is from mayberry days. I wouldn't mind a couple old hippies to hang out with when we move there. just so they aren't "scary".
