I have a 5th grader who will be going to middle school next year. Our neighborhood school is Jefferson Middle School, but I became interested in Hanes Magnet School when I noticed that the theme is Engineering and Math. Plus, I am interested in their AG/HAG program. Right now, my daughter is in AG, but tested for HAG yesterday--don't know the results yet. What concerns me is the school is not in a good neighborhood. However, I am willing to overlook that if the school is safe and offers an excellent education. Can anyone tell me anything about this school?
I'm just seeing this post, and hope you decided to enroll your child at Hanes. Posting this reply as a future reference for others considering the school. My daughter is currently an HAG student in 7th grade at Hanes. It is an EXCELLENT school! The teachers are top-notch, students are very self-motivated, and parents are very involved in all aspects of school life. I take exception to the statement that the school's not in a "good" neighborhood. I have to assume the writer is referring to the fact that the neighborhood immediately surrounding the school is predominantly hispanic, and lower wealth, ringed by lower-middle-class, black neighbors. If you are one to believe that's what makes an area 'bad,' you will probably also not like the fact that Hanes is attached to/aligned with an elementary school (Lowrance) with predominantly developmentally delayed, special needs students. Yes, the school is very safe, and students are well monitored by staff on and around school grounds at all times.

Yes--Statistically "predominantly Hispanic, and lower wealth, ringed by lower-middle-class, black neighbors" does create a higher crime neighborhood.

What does having developmentally delayes students nearby have to do with crime?
My daughter is now at Hanes and loving it. Actually, I grew up in a neighborhood within walking distance from Hanes, came from a lower middle class background and went to Hanes before the HAG program existed there so I am definitely not a person who is speaking from "bigoted" fears/attitudes, but I am sure I must have have sounded that way since you can't see me over the forum. LOL! That's why I said that I was willing to overlook some of the issues if the school offers an excellent education in a safe environment. I know firsthand that schools in low income areas have issues and many are struggling--unfortunately--and those issues seem to go ignored. I am tough and not easily intimated, however my daughter not so much because she grew up differently than I--that's why I was concerned about a "diverse as well as a safe learning environment". I was looking for a school environment where the students and teachers are motivated and where my daughter won't "afraid" to be smart which can be an issue at schools in economically disadvantage areas. My daughter loves school, unlike I did at her age, and I don't want that to change. The AG/HAG program at Hanes is not necessarily the "most diverse" considering it is in a predominately Black and Hispanic neighborhood, however, my daughter LOVES the school and is excelling. Thanks for the postive responses. I have a grandson attending Hanes Magnet and he is an AG student. According to my daughter, who passed away right before Christmas, this is an excellent school. If I didn't trust her judgement, I would have told her he needs to attend school elsewhere. I will be visiting there Thursday to meet with his teachers and check on his progress. Again, thank you for your reassurance that he is attending a good, safe school.
^ 72 is correct that the surrounding neighborhood is probably not the best place to wander around at night, but the school itself is very safe. I know lots of kids who went/go to Hanes, and I've never heard of a single incident of concern. It should not be a factor when deciding whether to send your kid(s) there.
