I have a job opportunity in the Triad area and am researching moving to the area. I have two teenage daughters: one in 8th grade and one in 11th grade so the school system is important to us. I would be relocating from Kentucky in a city with about 70,000 people. We have always lived in the county on the outskirts of town, so I believe some of the smaller rural communities to the north of Greensboro and Winston-Salem would be a better choice than living in either of the bigger cities. I say to the north because the job opportunity is actually to the north of Greensboro and I would want to keep my commute to under an hour.
For housing, we would want at least a 3 BR, 2 BA home (possibly with some acreage, but not a necessity) for around $150,000 or a little lower.
Both of our children are very active and participate in sports (soccer, swimming, cheer leading, and softball) so hopefully the school system would offer these opportunities. However, if not, then we would consider club sports.
Any advice as to areas to choose or stay away from would be greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows of a good place or website to look for rental properties, that would be great as well since I may need to rent for a short period of time while we decide on a permanent location.
Western Region Schools for Greensboro are preferable. Which isn't to say there aren't some very good schools within each region.
The areas of Pleasant Ridge Rd, Oak Ridge, Stokesdale, Colfax and Summerfield are more rural. With
quick access to the Airport and you're still generally 20 to 25 minutes away from almost anything in the city.
Both the Forsyth and Guilford school systems offer all of the sports you mentioned at the high school level. I don't think there is middle school swimming, I may be wrong about that. But there is a league that a lot of city and neighborhood pools have teams is. As with almost any large urban area, some schools are better than others.
I live in Winston so I'll tell you what I know about it. Someone living North of the city would likely be zoned for North Forsyth or Carver High, and for Middle Schools the possibilities are Northwest, Mineral Springs, or Hanes. You will actually get a choice for middle school. Walkertown High may or may not be open for next year.
I have to tell you that Hanes and Carver are NOT great schools. Avoid them. North Forsyth and Northwestern are okay, but they aren't the best. Mineral Springs is a great place.
If you can arrange other transportation for them (11th and 12th graders can drive to school) then they could go anywhere, but bus transportation would be unavailable if they went to a different school. The best High Schools are Mt. Tabor, Reagan (the closest, most likely), and Reynolds. The best middle schools (other than Mineral Springs, you kind of win the lottery with that one) are Jefferson and Meadowlark.
The school system has many athletic offerings, and there is a place called Career Center where students can spend half the day taking classes that would never be offered at a normal public school.
