We have a 4 year old girl and a 1 year old boy. What time do people expect kids to knock on their doors around Winston Salem? I've noticed that it's starting to get dark around 6 pm. Is 5 o' clock too early?

There's no hard and fast rule, but dusk is traditionally when it gets started, usually around 5:30 or so. But with kids as young as yours, I'm sure no one would mind if you started a little earlier.

A lot of people may not be home at 5:00 pm. If it were me, I'd go out at around 6:00 pm. I assume you'll be with them (or at least very close) if it does get a bit dark while you're out.

I agree, I think more people are home at 6PM. We have always gone out at 6PM with our kids (around the same age as your's) and have always had a great time from 6-7PM. We have to leave a bowl on our porch since we aren't home though!

I don't think most people expect anybody coming around before about 5:30. Halloween is on a Saturday this year so work schedule shouldn't matter, and if they are really young, I don't see a problem with 5:00, but 5:30 is more the "standard" time, probably roughly 5:30-7:30 overall. After 7:30 you'll just get the teenagers.
