I went to Highpoint this summer to the gigantic furniture store (one with big dresser in front)....I didn't get the feeling that I was getting the bargain I have been told about buying in NC....does anyone know of a place to order from for contemporary furniture? I have been told that you can negotiate price and get a great deal. I didn't have a lot of time when I was there, but will take another trip if I had a clue where to go....thanks for any help

Don't know what you are looking for - the store with the big dresser in front is FurnitureLand South. I wouldn't call that store a discount place but they do have an outlet in one of the buildings. There are so many places - you have to shop around for the bargains. Try running a search on Furniture NC - that will give you a list of all kinds of places.
Be very, very wary of some of these discount 1-800 type places. There have been numerous stories of customers paying (or at least paying large deposits) only to have places go out of business before they every get their furniture.
I knew someone who worked at one of these type places in High Point. The bills got really tight and they were dependent on the new orders that came in to actually pay for the previous orders because the company they'd order from would no longer extend credit and required cash up front to ship. There is just no way out of that vicious cycle.
I've searched all over the place to find less expensive quality furniture. We went to all the discount stores, closeout stores, sample stores and we got the best deal of all at Ashley Furniture showroom. I figured as well that since this is the furniture capital, that there must be a great deal of "deals" out there, but not really. Ashley had a good selection, not great, but the price we got on our sofa was amazing. We bought the "cityscape" model, the sofa and loveseat were $396 apiece, and we bought another sofa sleeper for $596. These prices blew away all the other stores and they even had some better deals on other models too. The thing you have to watch out for is that if you want a chair or ottoman to go with the set, you are going to pay more than the cost of the sofa for it. Only other drawback was that it take ~3 weeks to get your stuff since they make it to order. Hope this helps, I know I was tired after driving all over and back looking at furniture.
