The prior post is right on, Sweet Potatoes is so big and well known it probably violates a couple of soul food creed.

This is not very helpful, BUT, there is a place that is the real deal, over near the NC School of the Arts. I always get so turned around over there, but it is with several blocks, on the side away from downtown. On a corner. My daughter eats there, ever now and then on college student budget.

She could not afford Sweet Potatoes, except when we take her. Sweet Potatoes is great, it is jus pretty upscale Soul Food.

Good Luck and enjoy.

Perhaps, if you think you they should be charging Waffle House prices.

You might want to compare the two menus and according to the online menu for Snack Bar C&W is $7.95:

SnackBar Greensboro | Food Delivery | GrubHub

Chicken and Waffles | Durham and Greensboro, NC Wings

Over on Acadia and Broad? Right around Washington Park? There was a restaurant there for YEARS called Acadia Grill, which shut down in 2009 and was replaced by a soul food restaurant called Big Mama's. They stayed open a few years, but shut down last year, and a new owner reopened the Acadia Grill under the original name. It's more homestyle/country cooking than soul food, I think. I've never been.

The troubling thing for me about "homestyle" restaurants is the style usually equates to slop.

I just don't know. I am sorry. I can kind of picture it, and I think a car ran in to it a year or two ago when the car messed up at an intersection, but I may be making that up. I dunno.

Sometimes, but I've had plenty of excellent homestyle food.

I don't recall that particular incident, but it sounds like we may be talking about the same place. It's literally three blocks from NCSA.
