Hello ! I am currently looking into moving up to the Triad area from South Florida. I am a firefighter in my mid 20s and single. My job would be in Winston however do not mind a commute to work. I was looking into some input as which area would be a better fit for me. I have visited Winston a few times however have not had time to check out possible communities to live or the nightlife. I have heard that Greensboro is a little more fast paced with a better nightlife? Any suggestions/input about these areas or the communites around them would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

We've had several threads about this in the past, so you might want to search the forum for more information. But I think the general consensus is that there's not much reason to commute from one or the other if you have the choice--both offer quality living, and if you want to take advantage of the other city's amenities it's a short drive away. Other things being equal it's best to live where you work.

And by the way, Winston-Salem is better.

Personally, I like being centrally located - I'm 15-25 minutes (near Wallburg) from either Winston-Salem, Greensboro, or High Point. The downside is that I'm not very close (under 15 minutes) to much of anything. lol.

With Wake Forest University in the heart of Winston Salem, I think WS is a better fit for someone your age

If you want to live in a city with greater shopping, restaurant and entertainment options, choose Greensboro. Greensboro does have more things and events going on in the city than Winston-Salem. Greensboro has a more vibrant nightlife and has a more extensive park and trail system for recreation. But Greensboro is naturally going to have more since its the larger city.

Winston-Salem is a nice cool artsy city but outside of downtown and Old Salem, there is not much going on there. Winston-Salem is basically a larger version of Durham. Both W-S and Durham have an industrial tobacco history and both cities are in the biotech research sector. One thing you will find out is the competitive nature between Greensboro and Winston-Salem. In a friendly way, both cities stick their nose up in the air at each other and think they are the better city LOL. It just depends on what you are looking for. Both cities have different vibes. I do love the terrain in Winston-Salem with its rolling hills. Greensboro is more of a flat city with exception to the far northwest side of the Greensboro.

hmm...having lived in South Florida. i.e. Punta Gorda, and Tampa. Greensboro's just always been a better fit for me. Suggest Greensboro/High Point around the Wendover/Paladium area...that will get you on a reasonable commute trajectory. Plus there are lots of transplants in your age group in and around there.

Suggest picking up a copy of the local Yes! Weekly. To get some idea on things to do, where to go etc. Greensboro Jaycee's offers a great opportunity to meet young people in the area. There's also a flag football league for the Triad based out of Greensboro. I moved to W-S last summer to get closer to work. Sure it's a nice area, just not a good fit for me. So packing up again this spring and moving "home."

Thank you allfor your responses! From the people I've met it's seems that Greensboro may be a better fit for me. I will definitely do more research, it's always nice to hear feedback from natives/current residents. It seems however that anywhere is better than "crummy" South Florida. Thanks again!
