Default Where are the best bungalow neighborhoods in the Triad?

I would like to retire to a city the size of Winston-Salem or Greensboro. In particular, I would like to live in an established (historical) neighborhood of smaller homes (2-3 bedrooms say) that is either close to downtown or that has its own (walkable) shopping district. I am particularly fond of bungalows and cottages from the early to mid-20th century. I have read some positive things about the Ardmore neighborhood of Winston-Salem, and it does look nice from Google Earth. Are there any other neighborhoods in Winston-Salem or Greensboro I should consider? Safe and well-kept neighborhoods only, please.

As far as I can tell, Ardmore doesn't have a walkable shopping district. I've been driving around there looking for homes myself and while you *could* walk to a grocery store from the north end of Ardmore, it's down and up a pretty steep hill that might be troublesome to do on a regular basis.

Washington Park still seems a little sketchy to me but I don't have solid personal experience with that area. West End has a lot of bigger, more expensive homes but there are some bungalows mixed in and it has more shops and restaurants in walking distance.

After reading some earlier posts, I get the impression that Lindley Park in Greensboro may be similar to Ardmore (at least it looks that way from Google Earth). Could anyone comment on the relative merits of Ardmore and Lindley Park or suggest other similar neighborhoods? Again, I would be living there in retirement and am chiefly concerned with safety, cleanliness, and fairly easy access to neighborhood stores (groceries) and downtown.

I don't know anything about Greensboro, but I think Ardmore neighborhood would best fit your needs in Winston-Salem. I walk to the Cloverdale shopping on a regular basis (about 1 1/2 miles for me and I find it easy) center and you could also walk to a Food Lion grocery store. I don't like crossing the busy street for Whole Foods - there is also only a narrow sidewalk there, but I have done it too. Soon there will be a Trader Joe's and currently a Harris Teeter at Thruway shopping center which could be somewhat walkable depending on where you live in Ardmore. Again, you would have to cross a pretty busy street, but there are lights. In general, I just don't find W-S to be the most pedesterian friendly city. I feel like cars aren't really looking for me and I have to be on guard. Ardmore has very cute and well maintained houses. I feel like it is mostly retirees, young families and hospital residents. It is my favorite neighborhood in W-S. You are located very close to downtown and Old Salem. Less than 3 miles away are major shopping centers, restaurants, hospitals and doctor's offices. You can get away with driving less than 10 miles a day if you live in Ardmore. Good luck!

Greensboro's Treasured Places

Here you go...it speaks for itself. Greensboro has nine areas distinct areas that exemplify the craftsman/bungalow period. There's also more examples in W-S vs. Ardmore which Ardmore seem's more 1950's revival vs. 20's authentic?

Great website! Thanks for the tip. Has an article about the Sunset Hills neighborhood, which looks beautiful. Seems to be a slightly more upscale neighbor of Lindley Park. I like them both.

Thanks! Looks like there are a wealth of beautiful historical cottages in Tarboro. Town might be a bit sleepy though. Has anyone been there?
