Cool...another chance for me to chime in about Meadowlands, the subdivision we live in.
Don't know what price range you'd be looking at if/when you buy - homes here are generally $300k-$500k. It's southeast of W-S, just outside the (very) small town of Wallburg, in northeast Davidson County. We love the area for its mix of people from different areas, the low property taxes, good schools, safe neighborhood. Only negative so far (we moved here last summer) is that it's 15 minutes from almost anything other than gas and groceries. But it's 20-25 minutes from almost everything in the Triad.
Since you have a child that will be going into Kindergarten, schools will be a major consideration regarding where to live. In Winston-Salem, the school system is combined with Forsyth County. Their website is: wsfcs.k12.nc.us
Also, you can get info on the relative performance of schools from the NC School Report Card site: ReDir
In Winston-Salem, the better schools are generally on the western side of the city. Specifically, the best elementary schools for Kindergarten would be Jefferson, Meadowlark, Vienna, Lewisville, Clemmons, Sherwood, and Whitaker. For pre-schools, there are quite a number of church based pre-schools that are very good, so it might depend on your denominational preference.
