Does anyone ever wonder what could have been had Guilford and Forsyth Counties voted on a 1% fast food tax (sigh-$.01 for every $.99 double cheeseburger) to put the Triad on the map, given this area a HUGE economic boost, and given this state a major league baseball team back in 1998? I actually live in Charlotte but would have made this trip all the time. It maddens me and saddens me this didn't happen. It would have been so good for the Triad and the state. The summers are so boring without major league baseball. I know the chances are next to 0% with the new A ballparks in Winston and Greensboro, but is there ever any talk of this anymore?

Many in Charlotte are fighting for it, but many are also fighting for a new AAA ballpark, due to all the other entertainment options in Charlotte. Raleigh is not likely to happen either, in my opinion, especially if they get MLS which sounds likely.

IMO, citizens of the triad voting MLB down was the most intelligent politcal decision I have seen, the proposal was grossly lopsided favoring the Twins ownership. If you do a search you can read up on the millions Minnesota is being asked to fork over for a new stadium; that could have been us.
No thanks!
IMO MLB is boring, I much rather watch AAA play as they are just bad enough to keep it interesting.

To be sure, baseball is not what it used to be. And for sure the cost is high. But for major league baseball there would have been many thousands coming to the Triad every year from outside of the area, spending a lot of $$$. But, I guess there's a reason that the 1% fast food tax failed, because people didn't want to pay!

But, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Winston and Greensboro get semi-gouged with taxpayer $$$ for their new A stadiums anyway, with FAR less return on investment from spenders outside of the area than MLB would have brought?

I too live in Charlotte, but love the Triad. As I remember it, the Twins were toying with the Triad to get money for a new stadium, and moving from Minnesota, so that they could end up with the best deal....which was to stay where they were. I also remember more support and boosterism from the Winston-Salem side for the deal than I remember from Greensboro, which is typical of anything Triad related. Winston-Salem and Forsyth as it turned out was putting more money up front for Major League Baseball to come at the time. And this is usually the case.....if something is happening in the Triad, and it pertains to Winston-Salem, it is in the "Triad." If it is in Greensboro, it is in Greensboro. This is the way all news reads on a consistent basis in the "Triad Business Journal". Greensboro cannot stand to give up any credit to Winston-Salem.

WS was got hosed after the respective partners buildingg the stadium got into financial trouble and WS had to pick up a portion of the tab to get the project completed. As for Gboro no tax dollars were used to build the ballpark.

I prefer minor league ball to the majors...I wasn't here when bring MLB to the Triad this was being discussed. I love the Dash and Hoppers ballparks...headed to Greensboro on Sunday for a game.

I agree with the locals. I want nothing to do with major league baseball. Aside from the fact that we don't need any spoiled millionaire athletes with more money than sense (but that's another thread), it is a very difficult economic case to make. Many small market teams struggle to put enough fannies in the seats, and the pressures to keep the facilities upgraded mean the locals have to pony up big bucks to keep the team from wandering elsewhere.

We saw it happen with the NBA in Charlotte, and as mentioned above we recently got burned with a tiny, run-of-the-mill minor league team. While the new Dash stadium is very nice, it cost the city a lot more than it had planned to spend. And to take a family of four to the ballpark as it is, you can easily spend $100 or more. Lots of fun, but definitely not cheap. The major leagues would cost even more, leaving many unable to afford it.

Between the partners I believe, don't quote me on it. Since I live over here I loosely followed the story.

If the Twins had made it here, I would have learned to love the DH.
