We may be building a custom home, and they look like an outstanding option for the price and quality....any opinions on them?

I bought one of their model homes in Ohio... nothing but TROUBLE! After a 1 1/2 years, we started having trouble. We found out that the front door was never attached, the vinyl flooring shrunk about 5 inches from our cabinets, the back door was never sealed so it leaked and rotted my floor..... We even had to take them to court because they admitted it was their contractor's fault but refused to pay to fix any of it. My neighbors, also Schumacher homes, had trouoble as well. The customer service stinks. DO NOT build with Schumacher homes. The quality just is not there!!! I am also fairly certain that they were not allowed to hold a permit in our county for a few years and were kicked out of the Better Business Bureau because of so many complaints.

Response from the company
Hi Lah1NC, My name is Bill and I am the Chief Operating Officer for the company. I’m sorry that we didn't provide an optimal experience with us and I would like the opportunity to make it right. While we pride ourselves as providing the best combination of price and quality in the custom home building industry, when you build over 5,000 custom homes there are rare instances where issues occur.
I did some searching for a case that matched yours and I can't seem to locate your situation. I would really appreciate the opportunity to close the loop with you personally so that I can better understand the situation you experienced, help to make it right for you and ensure that we can avoid things like this happening in the future. We are backed by an extensive warranty program and I would like to personally help you get started on that process for the issues you've mentioned here.
If you are willing to contact me, please call 1-800-813-1116 x337 (my direct extension). I look forward to speaking with you personally about it.
Regards,
Bill S.

I know, personally, of plenty of people who don't trust that company because they will NOT give out floorplans unless you sign a contract with them. The reason was supposed to be something along the lines of not wanting their floorplans used by others, in the market. So, either they are cutting corners, or revising the floorplan as they go because they are incapable of adhering to it, or they don't realize what century we live in. The homes are also built *very* close together. I don't see how neccessary it is to put such homes on .20 acre lots - often less - in such a breathable area as North Carolina. It's an older company, there's family in it. In this case, this may be proving to be a problem for them...
The floorplans in my opinion, with the exception of a few, are very average. What I do like is the Reedy Fork neighborhoods up in NE Greensboro. Good schools, a bit of a drive, but it was developing along very nicely before the money bust. Because of that, all things considered, I'd still recommend owning your first home there. The HOA does their job, the people who live *are* happy (even with their HOA) and will tell you as much, plus they have their own pool, school, sidewalks (thank GOD!) and it's extremely clean and family oriented. But DO see the houses and lots in person. There isn't much there in the way of outdoor square footage, and if you have kids, I'm sure this is going to be a concern for you. They have good ones, but you must see them in person. What use is a .24 ac yard if it's 65 degree slope?
Thems my 2 cents.

Hi,
I work for Schumacher Homes and know them to be a reputable company. I visited this site because a customer told me about it. I see that there is some misinformation and wanted to address it.
The plans are are online, so you can print any of them off. They do not give out builder's sets. Nothing dishonest there.
Schumacher Homes does not build spec homes, or neighborhoods. They strictly build on the homeowner's lot. The development you are referring to, must have hired Schumacher to build their homes for them. Developer's often do that and find the experience to be a good one.
Hope this helps.

Malinda, nice of you to let us know the floorplans are online. This must be a fairly recent development. We haven't even been in the area a full year yet and I was told by the salespeople on more than one occasion and at more than one location that Schumacher would expressly *not* let employees give out printed floorplans except in the case of a signed contract, and then more detailed plans would be given to the buyer, of course.
Also, before we moved to the area, I had contacted Schumacher and was given a mailed envelope of information, but never a single floorplan.
I am however very, very happy to see that Schumacher has finally decided to catch up and post their floorplans online at least. Can you verify that potential customers can now go to said developments and received printouts or flyers of the floorplans they're interested in (for example, Reedy Fork)?
Thank you for your help! And thank you very much for chiming in and bringing the information to light!
