Hi everyone! I'm currently in Rocky Point, NY on Long Island and my husband just accepted a job in High Point, NC. He starts next week! He will be coming down first and then myself and our 3 kids will be down in a few months. He has looked around the area and I've been looking at demographics, etc to try to find an area close by that has great schools but is still affordable. He is willing to commute to work as here in Suffolk county he was commuting hours into the city. So, for right now he would like a safe studio with a short term lease and then we will be renting a house. Any suggestions for us as to where to look? Thank you in advance! Christine

If he lives in High Point the best bet in the northeast side of town or the northwest side of Greensboro as it will give him a straight shot into High Point.

For the kids ages, and school district. Highly recommend Allerton Place as a temporary rental. It's in the NW Guilford school district...located right across from a golf course with nothing much else around it. It'd be a straight shot down 68 to High Point.

Christine,

My soon to be wife and her family moved to the Triad area from Long Island, NY as well. They moved here around the late 90's. Her parents live in the Oak Ridge, NC area, which is the northern part of Greensboro, NC. I still don't know the area too well myself, since I will be officially moved by the end of September, but I have heard that the Northern county schools are the better schools. I don't know your price point as far as homes, but if it's $200K+, then the Summerfield/Oak Ridge area would be really nice, especially if you're not really wanting to be right in the city.

Thanks so much for the information. My first concern right now is just for my husband finding a good apartment for a few months. Where we are from on Long Island is very different from NC from what I've heard. For example our town is a great town with almost 0 crime. We know what towns are the bad towns aka ghettos here and we stay away. I heard it's more of a mixture there like one town can have nice areas and ghetto areas. So I will look into the areas you all mentioned and hopefully I find a good apartment for him. After that atleast he will be there to look at everything.

Also, right now I live in Rocky Point and the schools are Rocky Point schools. Each town has it's own school district or a few towns might be in one district. I assume schools there go by county? And where you live in the county determines the specific schools?

Yes, schools are mostly by county in NC. But each School Board has its own policies as to assignments. The high-transplant, faster-growing areas are experiencing overcrowding and this results in some crazy assignments sometime (see: Wake county, where Raleigh is). I don't think Forsyth county is as bad as Wake (yet).

From what I hear, the Oak Ridge area and the Summerfield area are near to zero crime. But again, I'm in the process of moving into the area myself, so I'm sure there's others on the board who could give you more accurate info. There are apartments around the Oak Ridge area for your husband...actually my fiancee' just moved out of an apartment that was only about five minutes from her parents' place in Oak Ridge, so you do have renting opportunities. But, yeah you are right, where I am coming from (Southside VA) you do tend to have good neighborhoods and bad neighborhoods within a close distance of each other.

My husband has been in High Point for 2 weeks now. He started by staying in an extended stay hotel so he can look for a studio there. We shop at Walmart here all the time. His first week there he went shopping at Walmart and the bank inside was being robbed while he was there. We are not used to that. It has given me second-thoughts about moving my family there. Maybe he was just shopping in the wrong neighborhood, I don't know.
