Hello, recent transplant from Durham here, formerly from New England not long before that.

My fiance and I have been trying to find a great orchard for pick your own apples like we grew up with back in Vermont. When we were in Durham, it was took far to drive out to the mountains, but now we are in WS, we figure we have better access to some better orchards. Where do ya'll go to pick apples?

Also, as a side note are there any good Corn Mazes?

Andreamus -- Where are you from in Vermont? Moved down here from there in 2009. I'm not aware of any pick-your-own orchards right in this area, but I'll check with my friend at work tomorrow.

Here are a couple of helpful links:

NC Farm Fresh
North Carolina Orchards Directory - our listing of orchards in North Carolina

Most of the commercial apple orchards are in the area around Hendersonville, just south of Asheville. There are also some that are closer to the Triad, like the Brushy Mountains area south of Wilkesboro, and in the Virginia mountains just above Mount Airy. The Altapass Orchard on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a fun visit, as they often have live music and other activities.

I can highly recommend J&A Orchard near Taylorsville, about an hour's drive from Winston-Salem. It's a relatively small orchard run by a very nice older couple, with several varieties planted near each other so you don't have to walk too far to get different kinds.
