I'm new to the area and noticed this area (in red) as we were driving downtown.

Is it just an open lot or is there a project pending?

I think it's part of the research park expansion. They have been digging around there for a couple of years.

Yes, that's part of the Piedmont Triad Research Park. Details here.

That project is definitely in it for the long haul. They recently knocked down an overpass over 52, there's supposed to be a traffic circle at the entrance, all kinds of things.

About a month ago they had a pile driver in action, scared the crap out of me when I drove by it make a loud bang. So right now they're just moving a whole lot of dirt. No idea when it will be done. It should bring a lot of opportunity and positive attention when it's all done, however.

Here's an architectural sketch of it - http://pbrigham.wordpress.com/portfolio/ptrp1/

As others have said, this is part of PRTP. They are daylighting the Bath Branch creek and building it into a water feature that will be a combined lake and storm water retention area. That lake will be almost L shaped as it follows along US 52 and turns the corner at Bus. 40.

They are also building Research Park Blvd. which will have a traffic circle at 3rd St. and will go under the highway and intersect with Rams Drive. The completion of that road will help to open up the central and southern portion of the park for more development.
