Last Friday I had to take my mom to a appointment on Stratford about two blocks from old I 40 ( sorry I grew up when new 40 and 85 was being completed and refer to them new and old). And about two blocks from Party City and couldn't believe the way traffic behaves in the area.
They need to design the road so traffic flows better.

The problem with traffic was that there so many traffic lights with long cycles and only two lanes. If someone ahead is turning left into the numerous business along the route then that stops the flow of traffic in the left lane or you have cars dashing across into your direction of travel from either direction.
Only time there is a turn lane is approaching an intersection and it is short.
Another problem with that stretch it sits in between new and old 40 adding to the volume.

The road needs a suicide lane in middle for turning traffic the entire road and fix it so those exiting business along the route to be forced to turn right and go to the next coming light if cars need to U turn. Then fix the lights so they are in sync with other lights then maybe traffic will flow better.

She forgot her phone at the office later that day and I returned on old 40 and traffic on that road flow smoothly and this was at rush hour.

I cant even imagine how anyone gets anywhere during holiday shopping season.

Yeah, it's a pain...I travel on Stratford Rd quite often. Fortunately not every day; I work off of Stratford but it's south of Hanes Mall Blvd and that section isn't bad.

Agreed, it can be bad, especially during lunchtime. But just for some perspective, this is probably the worst traffic situation in Winston, and fortunately we don't have many other areas that are bad. Conversely, this type of congestion is often the norm in larger cities like Charlotte or Raleigh. So in spite of Stratford Rd., overall the traffic situation in Winston is not bad at all.

They need to reduce the population back to 1970 levels when the roads were laid out.
But this is true of most problems in most cities and aspects of life.

The other end at Hanes Mall Blvd isn't any better, I call it "cluster f**k corridor."

Unfortunately that IS one intersection I have to deal with most days, on my way home. It's bad if I leave right at 5:00pm...a little less so if I go by closer to 5:30. I'm often foolish enough to be in that area shopping on Saturday afternoons - you'd think I'd learn.

I used to think that Silas Creek Parkway around Stratford and Hanes Mall was the worst thing ever. THEN I discovered the US 321-NC 105 intersection in Boone. By comparison, Winston-Salem is traffic heaven. Things really aren't so bad.

We made the mistake years ago of accidently going there on game day before US 421 was 4 lanes. Traffic was backed up to N Wilkesboro, we turned aroung and went home.
