That's the area that we're looking at for retirement. We live near Lake Norman now, but we'll start downsizing in approx. 5 years when our youngest leaves for college. Rockingham County seems to be the place (so far) as we can build a smaller place with elbow room for empty-nesting and still be able to transfer both our jobs to the I-40 area (looks like a short drive away).

My husband and I are leaving Charlotte after our 35 years of marriage, and need to move much closer to his Mom, in Danville, VA. We don't want to live in Danville...stay in NC, and are thinking of checking out Reidsville area - really, our goal is to be within 30-40 minutes from her. We're at the stage where we think we can handle small town living - our lifestyle no longer involves many cultural events, fancy restAURANTS, etc....however we want decent access to all of that. Am not interested in buying right away - would love to rent a condo or such...Would love to hear any input from ya'll - we're starting at ground zero, and feeling overwhelmed at what's ahead!

do you know of any developments, condos, or active adult communities in that area? We're actually looking to rent for a year or so before we buy

Just a thought, another option may be Blanch (e?) N. C. it is quite rural, a very small town, has a great Amish grocery where one can purchase some of the best butter you have ever tasted, it is just across the n.c. line from Va, puts you within 20 minutes, depending upon just where in Danville she is. Another possibility is you may not really want to be that close, in which case Reidsville might suit your purposes better. Blanch is a small farming community, no real shopping, but, Danville is close, less than 5 miles away

There is a great little theatre downtown that is an older venue with one screen. Very inexpensive, I think it is $3 or $4 for adult and they typilcally have 1 or 2 new movies showing. Mostly geared towards families.
