I moved to Winston Salem 6 years ago and bought a home in an older community. Since living here I've become aware that a drainage ditch that runs down the side and back of my property is not large enough to accommodate the volume of water that runs off of the street and surrounding properties (including 2 businesses adjacent to my property). Over the years there has been increasing erosion and the ditch is filling with tree limbs/leaf debris, etc. During a bad rain, inches of standing water are left in one of my neighbor's yard from the run-off, threatening their home that sits on a slab. It makes me sad that this occurs. My other neighbor told me recently that prior to my purchase of the property, the owners of my property and theirs had tried to get the county to clean out/deepen the ditch to resolve the excess water issues, but were told that they would have to purchase drainage tiles/pipes before they would do anything. Given that the county had to approve the businesses' commerical building plans, including the paved lots (vs. soil), etc. that have clearly exacerbated the water problems over the years, this doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't the county fix the problem?
